Proven Benefits

01Treats certain acute poisonings
02May reduce gas and bloating
03May lower LDL cholesterol

Chemical Forms

Recommended
  • Activated charcoal powder
  • Activated charcoal capsules
Avoid
  • Charcoal briquettes or BBQ charcoal (not food-grade, contain toxins and fillers)
Expert Note

Medical-grade activated charcoal is purified and activated to maximize adsorption. Skip briquettes or BBQ charcoal because they are not food-grade and may contain binders or contaminants.

Protocol

Amount
500 mg - 2 g
Frequency
As directed by clinician or poison control; for gas, 1-3 times daily
When
After meals for gas/bloating; for poisoning, take immediately as directed. Separate from all medications and supplements by at least 2 hours.

Condition-Based Dosing

Acute poisoning/overdose (medical emergency)
25–100 g as a single dose, per poison control direction
Intestinal gas/bloating
500 mg - 2 g after meals
Hypercholesterolemia (adjunctive)
4–8 g three times daily with meals

Safety & Limits

Upper Safe Limit
No established UL; chronic daily use is not recommended, and doses >10 g/day can impair nutrient absorption
Cycling
Use only short-term or episodically; if taken daily, stop after 1-2 weeks unless supervised.

Contraindications

Intestinal obstruction or severe ileus — risk of bezoar/impaction
Ingestion of caustic agents (acids/alkalis) — may interfere with endoscopy
Ingestion of hydrocarbons or metals — poor binding, limited benefit
Reduced consciousness or inability to swallow safely — aspiration risk
Pregnancy or breastfeeding — avoid routine use; use only if directed by a clinician or poison control

Avoid Combining With

  • Oral medications and supplements within 2+ hours (charcoal can bind them and reduce absorption)
  • Alcohol (not effectively adsorbed; no hangover prevention)
  • Dairy or high-fat meals taken at the same time (may reduce adsorption of some compounds)
